Five months after his no contest against Cyril Gane at UFC 321, heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has shared an important update about his condition. On Instagram, the British fighter revealed that he underwent surgery on both eyes at a clinic in London.

With this procedure, the champion hopes to regain his full fighting capacity before the end of the year. It is further evidence that the injury he suffered during the fight was not an excuse to avoid a potential loss, but a genuine issue following two eye pokes.

Earlier this week, UFC president Dana White announced that he had begun building the UFC White House card scheduled for June. Aspinall is already out of that event, and the organization could be preparing a fight between Cyril Gane, the top contender in the heavyweight division, and Alex Pereira, the reigning light heavyweight champion.

As for Aspinall, the UFC could consider stripping him of his belt in the coming weeks. Such a decision might be seen as a response to recent statements made by his team, particularly his father, who said during UFC 321 fight week: “I would like to see Tom box next years.” A move like that would send a strong message about loyalty and commitment to the organization.
