Last weekend, in the main event of UFC Mexico, England’s Lone’er Kavanagh surprised everyone by earning a unanimous decision victory over former champion Brandon Moreno.
Kavanagh’s creative striking was already known to be dangerous, but this weekend the Englishman showed that he truly has the potential to break into the flyweight elite. Over five rounds, he largely controlled the fight on the feet, with only a few moments against the cage giving the Mexican a slight edge.

In the second round, Kavanagh came close to finishing his opponent after landing clean shots and launching a strong combination that nearly overwhelmed Moreno, but ultimately failed to end the fight. In the fourth round, he may also have found a potential path to victory with his low kicks, which began to cause serious damage and might have led to a finish if he had continued to focus on them.
To reward this performance, the UFC moved Kavanagh up to No. 6 in the flyweight rankings, potentially opening the door to a major fight in the coming months.
Now, the question is whether he can eventually become champion.
